This week’s CAIRNS Etanhan Wotanin column, written on the day of a total solar eclipse, looks closely at drawings (called “glyphs” or “pictographs”) of previous eclipses depicted in Lakotan winter counts. The glyph/pictograph for 1869 in The Rosebud winter count is shown above. By studying data related to solar and lunar eclipses in the 1800s, the column proposes a new interpretation of the glyph.
