This week’s CAIRNS Etanhan Wotanin column explores a basic question if a modern Lakotan calendar is to be developed: when does a year begin? The closest traditional analog to a calendar are winter counts, which do record drawings that represent the names of years. But there was not a fixed date for when a year began or ended.
