AlterNATIVE Art Walking Tour in Downtown Rapid City

Friday, May 20, 2022

This morning, the CAIRNS director led a walking tour of American Indian art in downtown Rapid City. The event was organized for the biannual State Arts Conference. The tour started at Dakota Drum, owned and operated by Sonya Holy Eagle, who visited with us about her art and the business of art. From there we traversed Art Alley to Birdcage, a unique boutique of books, artworks and healing owned and operated by Lilly Mendoza, pictured above, who spoke about her artful life and her social justice work. Our excursion wrapped up with discussion of the cyclorama in the Dahl Arts Center.
